Castle Hayne 5-2014

Twenty five members met on May 2nd for the second trip into Castle Hayne this Spring. Again, great weather greeted the group where some great specimens were found. It reminded me of the old days at Castle Hayne when at least 14 C. auriculatus (shark) teeth were found! Trish Kohler, Diane Willis, Amy & Whyatt Plaster, Mark McKoy, Ted & Kathy Harrell, John Hamilton, Todd Power, Oscar Jones and myself all found “ricks.” Todd & Oscar both found three “ricks” while John Hamilton won the prize for the largest and most complete. Thanks John for bringing this specimen to the last club meeting to share. What a find!!   As in the first trip quite a few mosasaurus teeth were found. Mark & Lisa McKoy, Whyatt Plaster, John & Lynn Hamilton, Amber Jones (two trips in a row!!!), Todd Power and myself all found nice mosasaurus teeth. Libby Smalley actually found two!!!  John Timmerman,David Campbell and his son Tim were very excited in some of their mollusks finds – Santeevoluta wilmingtonensis, Calyptrea aperta . Phil and Amy Hillsman found some beautiful Cretaceous oyster – Flemingostrea s.  Linda McCall and Trish Kohler both found crab material while Linda found three Linthia echinoids and a nautiloid! The usual sand dollars, common echinoids, sharks teeth – Squalicorax, Cretalamna were found by all. Other participants were Mike & Emily Bruff, Roxada Story, Jim & Wes Mahoney. As usual we owe special thanks to Doug Pope and Martin Marietta for the opportunity to hunt this quarry. David Sanderson
