2016 Chandler Award Presented to Trish Kohler

In 2014, the NC Fossil Club created the Chandler Award in honor of long time NC Fossil Club Member and Janus editor, Richard Chandler.  The award may be given once a year to honor someone for their "significant educational contributions to the Club, or for aiding the Club's educational pursuits."

At the January 2017 NCFC meeting, the 2016 Chandler Award was given to long time member and former NCFC treasurer Trish Kohler.

Trish joined the NC Fossil Club in the early 1980's and was Treasurer from 1988 until "retiring" in 2015.  Trish was a meticulous record keeper and when the new Treasurer took over, turned over all her little paper ledger books from when she first became Treasurer.  Trish has also served as Board Member (1983-86, 2016-?), Secretary (1987), and as Membership Chairperson (1988-1995).

She is known for her volunteer work at the Lemur Center and the Museum of Life and Science in Durham; outreach to many schools and community groups; and as major exhibitor at the Aurora Fossil Festival and the Club's annual Fossil Fair.

Happy 25th Anniversary to Janus Editor Richard Chandler!

This spring marks Richard Chandler's 25th year as the editor of Janus.  He took over editing duties with the second issue of the 1990 Janus which came out around June 1990.  An exerpt from his first, From the Editor column:

"...As your editor I bring mostly enthusiasm to the iob. I am a mathematics professor at N.C. State University and have no training in paleontology. My interest in fossils originated from a field trip to Aurora sponsored by the N.C. Museum of Natual History (now the NC Museum of Natural Sciences). The trip leaders, Vince and Judy Schneider, told us about the N.C. Fossil Club and how the membership got to go to Aurora 6 or 8 times a year (Ah, the good old days) so here I am....."

The updated blogs are added to the Connect! page.  The forms on the slab had originally been interpreted as feeding traces, but are now believed to be tube organisms knocked down by current.

Keith Sturgeon Donates Late Eocene Crab Fossils

Former NCFC member Keith Sturgeon has donated two spectacular late Eocene crab fossils, Neozanthopsis carolinensis, to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in memory of Mike Milton, NCFC Membership Chairman, 1994-1998. Mike and Keith found the crabs about two weeks apart in a small private quarry in Duplin County in the early 1990's.

Mike gave his specimen to Keith when Keith moved to California. Keith eventually returned to North Carolina. In addition to the crabs, Keith also donated a spectacularly huge specimen (6¾" × 6¼") of the late Pliocene sand dollar, Clypeaster subdepressus. - (Text and photos by Richard Chandler )

Exhibit at the Schiele Museum

The Schiele Museum of Natural History is inviting collectors and vendors to exhibit at their annual Fossil Fair on Saturday February 23, 2013

Hours are 9 AM – 4 PM.  They're looking for collectors that would like to display their fossil and mineral collections as well as vendors that wish to sell fossils, minerals and related items to the public.  As in past years there is no fee for vendors or collectors to participate.  Last February, 900 people from around the Charlotte/Gastonia region attended this very popular annual event.

The museum supplies tables, chairs and power.  All space is indoors, located in the museum’s lobby and grouped in our upper exhibit areas for maximum exposure to our visitors.  We also provide a number of hands-on activities and educational programs throughout the day to make our Fossil Fair a well-rounded experience for visitors.   For those that need lodging they have a partnership with Hampton Inn that allows participating vendors and collectors a greatly reduced rate.

If you have worked with the Museum before they would love to have you  join them again.  If you have not, please consider participating their event.  To secure your space simply send an email to the address below. Set-up details will be sent by mid-January.
